TechTip: Link to another drawing, page or shape in Microsoft Visio

Link to Visio drawing

  1. Select a shape that you want to attach the link to, or display the page with nothing selected (if you want the entire page to be the link to another Drawing).
  2. Go to Insert - Hyperlinks menu on the top toolbar
  3. Enter the name of the Hyperlink (this will displayed when you right-click the shape/page)
  4. Click "Browse" beside the "Address" box and select "Local File"
  5. Navigate to the file you want and click "Open"
  6. Click "OK" to insert the Hyperlink
Link to a page in a Visio drawing
  1. Select a shape that you want to attach the link to, or display the page with nothing selected (if you want the entire page to be the link to another Drawing).
  2. Go to Insert - Hyperlinks menu on the top toolbar
  3. Enter the name of the Hyperlink (this will displayed when you right-click the shape/page)
    Click "Browse" beside the "Address" box and select "Local File"
  4. Navigate to the file you want and click "Open"
  5. Click "Browse" beside the "Sub-address" box
  6. Select the name of the page that you want to link to and the desired "Zoom" level
  7. Click "OK" all the way out
Link to a specific shape in a Visio drawing
  1. Navigate to the shape that you wish to link to
  2. Right-click the shae and select "Format" - "Special"
  3. Copy the text in the "Name" field
  4. Select a shape that you want to attach the link to, or display the page with nothing selected (if you want the entire page to be the link to another Drawing).
  5. Go to Insert - Hyperlinks menu on the top toolbar
  6. Enter the name of the Hyperlink (this will displayed when you right-click the shape/page)
  7. lick "Browse" beside the "Address" box and select "Local File"
  8. Navigate to the file you want and click "Open"
  9. Click "Browse" beside the "Sub-address" box
  10. Select the name of the page that contains the target shape
  11. Paste the name you copied in step 3 in the "Shape" field
  12. Select the desired "Zoom" level
  13. Click OK all the way out
Tip: To open the hyperlink, right-click the shape/page that contains it and select the hyperlink name. When you mouse over an element that has a hyperlink on it, mouse pointer will change to reflect that.
